A Few Tips On Repairing A Broken Hinge In Your Wooden Jewelry Chest
When fixing a broken hinge in your wooden jewelry chest, you should take extra care not to damage the box.
Use a chisel or block plane to slowly remove the damaged hinge. Use sandpaper to sand down the spot once you take out the hinge. A 150 grit sandpaper will be good for this. Then take a sanding disc and pad the box while clamping it in place on a bench vise. This will keep the box from sliding all over the place.
You can use an old or a new hinge, or even make a new one for your box. You can shape the hinge by hand using a spokeshave and block plane, or use a roundover bit and a router to shape it. Unless you are really comfortable with using a router, don't use it to mortise the hinge as it is very risky. Then, you can trim it and glue it back into the base of the box. Leave it for undisturbed for twelve hours to dry.
Use the 150 grit sandpaper to give it a final sanding once it is completely dry, and then drill holes for the wire hinges. Then use a matching stain and oil finish to give your box a brand new look! Here is another way in which you can replace a broken hinge on your box. Place the hinge wherever you want to put it on the box and then using an ‘f’ style clamp, clamp it into position. Using a mechanical pencil, mark the depth, height, and width of the hinge. Then unclamp the hinge and using a new razor blade and hammer, a small one will do, meticulously chisel stop cuts on the marked lines. Until the hinge fits perfectly, you need to keep doing this. Then, using a new razor blade or the 150 grit sandpaper, mortise the hinge. After installing the hinge on the jewelry box, align and clamp the lid to the hinge.
The type of hinge you want mounted affects the time taken to fix it. If it is a barrel hinge, the only thing you have to do is drill the hole correctly on the same spot both in the base of the box and on the top. This can be accomplished with a drill press and a stop block on the drill press table to hold the box in the same position. If you are looking to attach a surface mount hinge, you could use an auto-centering bit. However, ensure that you have the bottom and top of the box perfectly aligned before you start drilling. A tip is to first mount the hinge to the base of the box and only then to the top.
