How To Fix Broken Hinges On Your Wooden Jewelry Chest
Fixing a broken hinge on your wooden jewelry chest needs extra care to avoid damaging the box.
Gently remove the broken hinge with the help of a chisel or block plane. Once you have taken out the hinge, sand down the area with sandpaper. Use a 150 grit sandpaper for this. While clamping the box in a bench vise, use a sanding disc to pad the box. This will prevent the box from sliding everywhere.
You can consider using a new or an old hinge or even make one for your box. You can use a roundover bit and a router to shape the hinge, or you can shape it by hand. But using a router to mortise a hinge is taking a big risk unless you are really comfortable with it. Then, you can trim it and glue it back into the base of the box. Let it dry for 12 hours.
When it is totally dry, sand it again with the 150 grit sandpaper, and then drill the holes for the wire hinges. Then use a matching stain and oil finish to give your box a brand new look! Here is another way in which you can replace a broken hinge on your box. Place the hinge wherever you want to put it on the box and then using an ‘f’ style clamp, clamp it into position. Remember to use a mechanical pencil and mark the width, depth, and height of the hinge. Using a new razor blade and a small hammer, chisel stop cuts on the pencilled lines after you unclamp the hinge. Until the hinge fits perfectly, you need to keep doing this. Then use the 150 grit sandpaper or a new razor blade to mortise the hinge. Align and clamp the lid to the hinge after you install the hinge on the jewelry box.
How fast you can fix the hinge depends on what type of hinge you want mounted. If it is a barrel hinge, the only thing you have to do is drill the hole correctly on the same spot both in the base of the box and on the top. This can be accomplished with a drill press and a stop block on the drill press table to hold the box in the same position. In case it is a surface mount hinge that you are trying to attach, do it with the help of an auto-centering bit. But make sure that the top and the bottom of the box are in perfect alignment before you drill. You will find it easier if you mount the hinge to the base after you mount it to the top of the box.
