When You Need Tray Cable Learn Why The Cost Of Copper Matters To Your Bottom Line
Many folks following the markets lately have noticed that commodity prices have been on a steady rise through the first half of the year. As vntc cable as well as tray cable, type g, soow cable, and dlo cable are all very much dependent on raw input prices, there has been a noticeable increase in the pricing of these items.
Most of our regular customers are very much aware of the effects of increasing commodity prices. What has the biggest effect of course is the price of copper. Today for instance copper was selling for about $4.30 per pound at the COMEX. At this price point it is very close to its all time contract high of around $4.60 per pound hit earlier this year at the start of 2011. The question on everyone's mind is how much higher can it go.
A close second to copper in power cable production is the price of oil. As the outer sheathing and insulating material of most cables are petroleum based, the price of oil plays a significant part in pricing also. Oil of course topped out at about $147 per barrel in the summer of 2008 and right now is on the rise again primarily due to tensions in the Middle East and North Africa. Oil is currently going for around $104 per barrel.
If the economy continues to improve, it is quite possible that we will experience a continued rise in these raw input costs. The majority of economists agree that we will continue to see a measured but steady recovery that will go on for the rest of 2011 and beyond.
Many emerging markets are also experiencing improvements with China of course being the 800 pound gorilla in terms of economic growth. If we stay with this current track it is reasonable to believe that copper and oil will continue to increase in cost. If you are a heavy user of the larger types of wire and cable it may be in your best interest to take a look at projected usage for the rest of this year and possibly think about stocking up now before we start to see the large price increases.
So how can you use this knowledge to your advantage? When you see prices decline on the NYMEX, make sure that the company you are buying from is reducing the costs of their finished products to you. Often, companies are quicker to increase prices than to lower them. Armed with the knowledge of raw goods costs, make sure that your supplier is pricing their wire and cable appropriately.
When you see there is a disparity between the cost of the raw commodities and your finished product price, think about contacting another distributor for another bid. There are quite a few distributors who sell tray cable and vntc cable. This extra effort on your part may help you keep more profit in your pocket. Plus, knowledge of falling prices can allow you to reduce your job quotes, which might in turn make your bid a bit better than your peers – and allow you come out on top more often.
