Slow Sand Water Filtration and It's Uses

One of the reasons that slow sand water filtration is so useful is because it doesn't require the use of pressurized systems in order to produce clean, and good tasting water. The process is green since there are no chemicals or electricity used. In addition, they are so simple to construct that it can be done as a do-it-yourself project and only require a small bit of operator training to operate and maintain once they are installed. Slow sand filters have been used successfully in countries, such as in isolated areas of Afghanistan, where water quality is low. Poor areas of the world will really find them useful since they're highly effective, simple, and most importantly cheap.

Surface water is usually cleaned using slow sand filters. One drawback is that they require a large amount of space to operate. They usually require an area one or two yards deep. Once the filters have finished cleaning the water, it's stored in tanks until the time comes when it's needed. Although these filters are primarily used in developing countries, they are sometimes found in very modern regions of the world, such as London. Larger facilities that serve more people can have as many as 12 sand beds operating at the same time.

Each bed lies on a series of herringbone drains covered with layers of pebbles and coarse gravel. The bedrock is filled with a layer of sand and fine sand is used for the rest of the area. In fact, the majority of the sand filter is made up of fine sand. Unfiltered water is then put onto the sand bed.

A gelatinous layer forms in the fine sand within a few days. Fungi, protozoa, aquatic insects, bacteria, and many other substances make up this layer. As the layer continues to age, it spawns more algae as well as larger organisms, such as snails and worms. It is this layer that filters the clean water and makes it safe to drink. This process is capable of removing up to 99% of the bacteria in the water.

Sooner or later, the filtering layer will need to be overhauled. The entire layer may be removed and replaced with an entirely new one. This takes a considerable amount of time Wet harrowing is another, quicker method which requires lowering the water level until it's just above the gelatinous layer and then stirring. This process washes away the contaminants until new water is added.

Slow sand filters aren't used as much in the U.S. as they were in the past. Cities don't like the fact that their operation requires so much land. Slow sand filtration is, however, still one of the most effective ways on earth for the purification of water. Doc No.lsdhhsdlh-sdlkjhsgd
